Language

The official language of Argentina is Spanish. However, the predominant variant spoken is Rioplatense Spanish, a dialect specific to the Río de la Plata region, whose most distinctive feature is the use of voseo. In Argentina, “vos” is used instead of “tú,” giving the language a particular intonation often described as “singing.”

This distinctive pronunciation is usually one of the first differences noticed by visitors when compared to other Latin American countries or Spain.

In addition, Argentina has a rich popular vocabulary known as lunfardo, a collection of expressions influenced by various linguistic traditions, particularly Italian, Spanish, and other European languages, inherited from the major waves of immigration of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
