VISAS TO ENTER CANADA FROM ARGENTINA

A visitor visa (also called a temporary resident visa) is an official document issued by the Embassy of Canada to individuals who meet the requirements to enter Canada.

Some Argentine citizens may apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), which is a requirement for entry for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. This document is electronically linked to the traveller's passport and is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

For more information on Canadian visas, we suggest you visit the official Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada website.

MONTREAL

Today, 120 distinct ethnic communities are represented in its population of more than 3.6 million, making Montréal a veritable mosaic of cultures and traditions. The world’s second largest francophone city after Paris, it merits the moniker ‘international’ city, a cosmopolitan centre with proud roots in the past that enthusiastically embraces the future. A world leader in such industries as aeronautics, information technology and biotechnology, the city has also made significant innovations in medicine, multimedia, the arts and urban planning. Its avant-garde spirit has not gone unnoticed: in 2006, Montréal was named a UNESCO City of Design.

LANGUAGE

Canada has two official languages: French and English. English is the most widely spoken language in most provinces and territories.

French is the most widely spoken language in Quebec, as well as in certain regions of Ontario, New Brunswick, and Manitoba.

The Act respecting French, the official and common language of Québec, adopted on June 1, 2022, amended the Charter of the French Language. As a result of these amendments, French was established as the sole official and common language of Québec, and its status was strengthened across all sectors of society.

PUBLIC TRANSIT IN MONTREAL

Public transit in Montreal is primarily managed by the STM (buses and metro) and Exo (commuter trains), with the addition of the REM (Réseau Express Métropolitain) for rapid connections, offering an extensive network including metro, buses, trains, and shuttles, accessible via the OPUS card or daily pass, with zonal fares and easy transfers between modes.

TAXES

There are two applicable taxes in Québec: a federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 5% and a Québec provincial tax (TVQ) of 9.975%. A 3.5% accommodation tax is also in effect in Montréal.

TIPS

It is customary to tip restaurant waiters, taxi drivers and hairdressers 15% of the bill, before taxes. Bellhops, porters, doormen, etc. generally receive at least $2 per service rendered. Coffee and food counters often have a tip cup next to the cash register.

QUEBEC BUSINESS HOURS

In Quebec, business hours are regulated by provincial law and can vary depending on the type of establishment, the municipality, and the time of year.

Generally, businesses operate on the following schedule:

Mondays and Tuesdays: usually from 9:00 a.m. or 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Wednesdays and Fridays: many establishments extend their hours until 9:00 p.m.

Saturdays and Sundays: usually from 9:00 a.m. or 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Grocery stores, pharmacies, convenience stores, and some shopping malls have extended hours, which may include evenings or continuous service.

On statutory holidays, opening hours may be modified, and some businesses may be closed. It is therefore recommended to check the hours directly with the establishments concerned.

QUEBEC'S CLIMATE

Quebec enjoys a mainly continental climate, characterized by four distinct seasons and marked temperature variations throughout the year. Summers are generally hot, while winters are long, cold, and snowy.

General characteristics

Seasons: cold, snowy winters and hot summers, with distinct springs and autumns.

Temperatures: vary by region and season, with annual averages around -1°C and extremes that can exceed 37°C in summer and reach -48°C in winter.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The province of Quebec offers a wide and diverse range of accommodations, tailored to different types of travelers, budgets, and needs. From international-class urban hotels to boutique lodgings, tourist residences, and alternative accommodation options, Quebec has high-quality tourist infrastructure throughout its territory.

Accommodation in the city of Montreal

The city of Montreal, the province's main urban and cultural center, has an extensive network of accommodations located in strategic areas, with easy access to public transportation and the main tourist, cultural, and gastronomic attractions.

Accommodation in other regions of Quebec

Outside Montreal, the province offers accommodation options in natural and rural settings, such as chalets and rural tourism establishments, especially in regions such as the Laurentians, Charlevoix, Estrie, and Quebec City. These alternatives allow visitors to combine comfort with experiences in direct contact with nature.

General recommendations

It is recommended to make reservations in advance, especially during the high season (summer, festivals, and holiday periods), as well as to verify the location, services included, and cancellation conditions of each establishment.

ELECTRICITY IN QUEBEC

In the Province of Quebec, the electrical system is the same as that used throughout Canada.

Voltage and frequency

Voltage: 120 V

Frequency: 60 Hz

Plug types

Type A and Type B

Two flat parallel pins (Type A)

Two flat pins with a round grounding pin (Type B)

These plugs are standard throughout Canada.

Adapters and transformers

Devices from Europe, Argentina, or other countries using 220–240 V require a voltage transformer in addition to a plug adapter, unless the device is dual voltage (marked 100–240 V).

Dual-voltage devices require only a plug adapter, not a transformer.

Availability

Electricity is reliable and widely available across the province. Hotels, tourist accommodations, and public facilities provide standard outlets and, in many cases, USB charging ports.

Recommendation

Travellers are advised to check the electrical specifications of their personal devices prior to travel and to bring the appropriate adapter or transformer to avoid inconvenience.
